Photocatalysis is an advanced oxidation process (AOP), known to break down – destroy – a wide range of organic compounds and pathogens. After decades of proven studies, and commercial use for decontaminating surfaces and air treatment, photocatalysis is now entering commercial use for water applications.
The process uses light, and a catalyst – in our systems, the catalyst is a food-grade material, titanium dioxide (TiO2).
Of all AOP approaches, photocatalysis is demonstrated to have the broadest spectrum of organic decontamination performance for the lowest energy cost.
CatalySys is leading with advanced catalyst formulations, and commercially robust reactor designs that maximize performance while keeping operating and mainanance costs low. Field tests with partners and clients show that our advanced reactor designs provide superior decontamination performance and better energy efficiency than other approaches.
When the catalyst is illuminated by UV light, it continuously generates short lived, highly reactive species, which are very effective at breaking organic molecular and chemical bonds. The catalyst is not consumed by the process, and needs no other chemical or electric additives. This simple combination of light and catalyst in water effectively destroyscontaminants, finally leaving behind clean water, carbon dioxide, and trace inert minerals.
Over the years, research has been successful at the small, laboratory scale. However, CatalySystems is at the forefront of design and scale-up to take photocatalysis from the research lab and out into the real-world, applying its technology to industrial and municipal sectors.
Our focus is on the fully automated reactor system, which activates the catalyst and drives performance and energy efficiency than other water treatment approaches.
