Filters or membranes just concentrate contaminants for disposal or later treatment. Photocatalysis efficiently destroys organics the first time.  Toxins, surfactants, BTEX, estrogenic compounds, pesiticides, dyes, bacteria - plus a spectrum of other contaminants - are simultaneously reduced or removed to stringent limits, leaving only water, and a small amount of carbon dioxide and inert minerals.
